Description
Crispy, golden hush puppies with a tender interior, made from a mix of cornmeal and flour. These air fryer fritters are traditionally served alongside Southern seafood or barbecue. Perfect for quick family meals or savory snacks, they deliver a comforting, homemade flavor without excess oil.
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 cup vegetable oil (for mixing)
Vegetable oil spray (for air fryer coating)
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, and chopped onion.
Add egg, milk, and 1/4 cup vegetable oil. Mix until smooth; let the batter rest for 10 minutes.
Using a cookie dough scoop, form 12-16 small balls (adjust based on air fryer size).
Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil.
Arrange the hush puppy balls in the basket, ensuring they don’t overlap.
Cook for 8 minutes, flip, and cook for another 5-7 minutes until golden and crispy.
Notes
Let the batter rest to avoid dense results. Adjust baking time depending on air fryer type. For extra flavor, stir in 1/2 tsp garlic powder or chopped herbs. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
