Description
A golden-crisp, steakhouse-style blooming onion made in the air fryer! This show-stopping appetizer features a tender onion center coated in seasoned flour, with a light and crunchy exterior. Perfect for gatherings or weeknight indulgence, it’s healthier than deep-fried versions and pairs beautifully with tangy dipping sauces.
Ingredients
1 large white onion
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup milk
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Instructions
Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C)
Carefully slice the onion in half from top to bottom, then cut petals into the onion from top to base without cutting all the way through
In a bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic salt, thyme, and oregano
In a separate bowl, whisk eggs and milk
Dip the onion first into the egg mixture, then pat into the seasoned flour mixture
Place onion root side down in the air fryer basket, spritzing lightly with cooking oil if desired
Air fry for 18-22 minutes, flipping halfway for even browning
Notes
For easier cutting, chill the onion in the fridge for 10 minutes before slicing
Adjust cooking time based on your air fryer model
Serve with ranch, aioli, or a tangy vinegar-based sauce
Avoid overcrowding the basket to ensure even crispiness
