Description
A halal-friendly adaptation of the classic Cantonese char siu recipe, using chicken thighs to replicate the sweet, smoky, and savory flavors of traditional roast pork. Achieve a glossy, sticky glaze with minimal effort in under an hour using your air fryer.
Ingredients
10.6 oz boneless chicken thighs (skin on or skinless)
⅓ cup halal-friendly Char Siu sauce
Sesame seeds, for garnishing
Instructions
Pat chicken thighs dry with paper towels
Pour Char Siu sauce into a bowl and coat chicken thoroughly
Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes
Preheat air fryer to 375°F
Place chicken in the basket skin-side down in a single layer
Spoon half the remaining sauce over the chicken
Air fry for 25 minutes, flipping halfway and spooning remaining sauce
Toasting sesame seeds in a dry pan (optional)
Garnish and serve
Notes
For halal-friendly sauce, substitute soy sauce with tamari and omit hoisin
Quick sauce alternative: mix equal parts ketchup and honey with rice vinegar, sesame oil, and ½ tsp Chinese five-spice
Trim excess fat for crunchier skin
Batch cooking recommended if air fryer basket is crowded
